One of the most common questions I hear in consultations is some version of “Which laser should I get?” Patients have heard about BBL from a friend, seen HALO on Instagram, or been told they need “resurfacing,” and they’re not sure how it all fits together.

Laser and light treatments aren’t one-size-fits-all. They’re a set of tools, each designed for a different job. Once you understand the basics, it’s much easier to have a productive conversation about what’s right for your skin.

Why fall and winter are “laser season”

Many light and laser treatments are safest and most effective when your skin isn’t tanned and you can avoid strong sun while you heal. Tanned skin absorbs more energy, which raises the risk of burns and unwanted pigment changes. Newly treated skin is also more sensitive to sun.

That’s why the cooler months, from roughly October through early spring, are a popular time to start a treatment plan. You can also time your recovery around holidays and events, and see your results build before summer.

How lasers and light work, simply explained

Every laser and light device delivers energy that is absorbed by a specific “target” in the skin:

  • Pigment (melanin) in sun spots and freckles
  • Blood vessels (hemoglobin) behind redness and broken capillaries
  • Water in the skin, which lets a laser heat or gently remove tissue in a controlled way

That controlled energy does two things. It treats the target directly, such as breaking up pigment, and it triggers your skin’s natural repair process, which builds new collagen and brings fresher skin to the surface over the following weeks.

Different devices use different wavelengths and settings to reach different targets at different depths. That’s why one treatment is great for sun spots while another is better for wrinkles or acne scars.

Meet the options

BBL® (BroadBand Light)

What it is: BBL is a type of intense pulsed light (IPL), so technically it’s light rather than a laser. It delivers a broad spectrum of light that is absorbed by pigment and blood vessels.

Best for: Sun spots, freckling, uneven tone, facial redness and visible small blood vessels. It’s also great for the face, neck, chest and hands, where sun damage often shows.

What to expect: Treatments are quick. Brown spots often look darker for several days before flaking away, and mild redness usually settles within a day or two. Most people return to normal activities right away.

Sessions: Often a short series to start, followed by maintenance treatments to keep up with new sun damage.

Good to know: BBL works best on lighter, untanned skin. It isn’t the right choice for everyone, especially people with deeper skin tones or melasma, which is why an in-person assessment matters.

Non-ablative lasers

What they are: These lasers heat tissue beneath the skin’s surface while leaving the outer layer intact.

Best for: Overall texture, mild to moderate fine lines, enlarged pores, early sun damage and some types of acne scarring.

What to expect: Redness and mild swelling for a day or a few days. You can usually wear makeup soon afterward.

Sessions: Results build gradually, so a series of treatments is typical.

Good to know: Non-ablative lasers are a great fit if you want steady improvement without significant downtime.

HALO™ (hybrid fractional laser)

What it is: HALO combines two kinds of laser energy in one treatment: an ablative wavelength that refreshes the surface, and a non-ablative wavelength that works deeper. “Fractional” means the laser treats tiny columns of skin, leaving untreated skin in between to speed healing.

Best for: Texture, pores, pigment and fine lines, and the overall “glow” patients often describe.

What to expect: Several days of redness and swelling, followed by a bronzed, sandpapery stage as treated skin flakes off. Most people plan for about a week of social downtime, depending on treatment depth.

Sessions: Some patients see the results they want after one treatment; others benefit from a short series.

Good to know: HALO sits in the middle of the spectrum, with more noticeable results than gentler options and less downtime than full ablative resurfacing.

Ablative laser resurfacing (CO₂ and erbium)

What it is: Ablative lasers remove a very thin layer of skin while heating the tissue beneath, prompting significant collagen remodeling. They can be used fractionally (in a pattern of tiny columns) or more fully, depending on the goal.

Best for: Deeper wrinkles, more significant sun damage, and acne or surgical scarring.

What to expect: This treatment involves real recovery time. Plan on one to two weeks of healing, and redness can last longer. Careful aftercare is essential.

Sessions: Often a single treatment, sometimes repeated depending on the goal.

Good to know: Ablative resurfacing can be very effective, and it requires the most careful patient selection, preparation and follow-up.

At a glance

Treatment Best for Typical downtime Usual sessions
BBL® / broadband light Sun spots, redness, uneven tone Minimal (spots darken and flake over several days) A short series, then maintenance
Non-ablative laser Texture, fine lines, pores, early sun damage 1–3 days of redness A series
HALO™ hybrid Texture, pigment, pores, fine lines, “glow” About 5–7 days 1 to a short series
Ablative (CO₂ / erbium) Deeper wrinkles, scarring, significant sun damage 1–2+ weeks Often 1

Downtime and number of sessions vary from person to person and depend on treatment settings. Your plan will be tailored to you.

Who should wait, or choose a different option?

Laser and light treatments are very safe in the right hands, but they aren’t right for everyone at every moment. Let me know if any of these apply to you:

  • You have a tan, including from a self-tanner, or recent strong sun exposure
  • You have melasma or tend to develop dark spots after skin irritation
  • You have a history of cold sores, since you may need preventive medication first
  • You take medications that affect healing or sun sensitivity, including some acne treatments and antibiotics
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have an active rash, infection or open skin in the treatment area
  • You have an important event coming up, so we can plan your treatment around your calendar

For patients with deeper skin tones, many treatments can still be done safely, but the choice of device and settings is especially important. This is one of the many reasons an in-person consultation comes first.

What to expect: before, during and after

Before: We’ll review your skin, medical history, medications and goals. You may be asked to avoid sun, pause certain skincare products (such as retinoids) for a few days, or start preventive medication.

During: Most treatments involve a cooling device and/or a topical numbing cream. Patients often describe the sensation as warmth or a quick snap, like a rubber band.

After: You’ll receive personalized aftercare instructions. Gentle cleansing, moisturizing and strict sun protection are key. Results continue to improve for weeks to months as your skin builds new collagen.

Frequently asked questions

Does it hurt?
Most patients find treatments very manageable. We use cooling and numbing to keep you comfortable, and deeper treatments get extra attention to comfort.

When will I see results?
With light-based treatments like BBL, improvement in pigment often shows within a week or two. Collagen-building results from lasers develop gradually over the following months.

Can I combine a laser with toxin or filler?
Often, yes. Many patients benefit from a combination plan. We’ll decide the timing and order together so each treatment can do its job.

How long do results last?
It depends on the treatment and on your habits. Sun protection, good skincare and maintenance treatments go a long way toward keeping your results.

Which one is right for me?
That’s exactly what a consultation is for! The best treatment depends on your skin type, your concerns and how much downtime you have.
