What Is BBL (BroadBand Light) and Is It the Same as IPL?

BBL and IPL are related technologies, but they are not the same, and the difference matters.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a broad category of light-based treatment technology used to address sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and vascular concerns in the skin. Many devices on the market deliver IPL, and the quality, precision, and clinical outcomes vary significantly between them.

BBL, or BroadBand Light, is a specific, proprietary technology developed by Sciton, and it is widely regarded as the most advanced and clinically validated light-based platform available. At Intentional Self Aesthetics, our BBL is delivered on the Sciton Joule, one of the most sophisticated aesthetic laser platforms in the industry.

What sets BBL apart from standard IPL is the precision of its energy delivery, the ability to customize wavelengths for specific targets such as pigment, vessels, and redness, and the depth of its clinical evidence base. The landmark SATURN study demonstrated that patients who received regular BBL treatments over time not only looked younger, their skin’s gene expression at a cellular level actually shifted to resemble younger skin. That is a remarkable finding and one that distinguishes BBL from most other light-based treatments.

BBL is highly effective for sun damage, age spots, uneven skin tone, redness, broken capillaries, and the overall dullness that comes with photoaging. It can be used on the face, neck, chest, and hands. At Intentional Self Aesthetics, BBL is also the platform we use for laser hair removal, offering precision and safety across a range of skin types.
