I trained as a pathologist before I became an aesthetic physician. My entire career has been built on looking closely before I act. Diagnostic ultrasound lets me bring that same discipline to filler. I can see the product itself, exactly where it sits, how deep it is, and how it relates to the vessels and structures around it. Then I treat what I actually see, not what I assume is there.
What is Ultrasound Filler Detection?
Ultrasound filler detection uses a handheld diagnostic ultrasound probe to image the tissue under your skin in real time. Filler shows up clearly on ultrasound, whether it was placed last month or ten years ago, and whether or not you remember what it was.
During your visit, I scan the treatment area and identify:
- Whether filler is present at all, and how much
- The depth of the product (superficial, mid-dermal, or deep to muscle)
- Whether it’s sitting where it should be, or has migrated
- Nodules, lumps, or areas of firmness, and whether they are filler, scar tissue, or something else
- The location of major blood vessels relative to the filler, before any needle goes in
This is diagnostic information you simply cannot get from a consultation and a fingertip alone.

Instead of injecting broadly across an area and hoping to reach the filler, I watch the product dissolve in the moment, confirm how much has broken down, and adjust the treatment in real time. For deep or long-standing filler, or filler in a delicate area like the tear troughs or lips, this precision matters.

What to Expect With Detecting and Dissolving Dermal Filler
I start with an ultrasound scan of the area in question. This alone often answers questions patients have carried for months or years.
I'll walk you through exactly what I see, where the filler is, how much is present, and what your options are, whether that's full dissolving, partial correction, or simply peace of mind that everything looks normal.
If you decide to move forward with dissolving, I inject hyaluronidase under ultrasound guidance directly into the visualized filler. Most areas take one focused session, though larger or older deposits may need a follow-up visit for a complete result.
