What Is GHK-Cu copper peptide and What Does It Do for Your Skin?

GHK-Cu, or copper tripeptide-1, is one of the most extensively researched peptides in skin medicine and one that I prescribe for my patients as part of physician-guided skincare protocols. Here is what the science says and why it matters.

What GHK-Cu is:

GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring copper-binding peptide found in human plasma, saliva, and urine. It was first identified in the 1970s by Dr. Loren Pickart, who observed that older human plasma caused liver cells to deteriorate while young human plasma maintained them. The active component turned out to be GHK-Cu. Since then it has been the subject of hundreds of studies examining its effects on skin, wound healing, and cellular biology.

What it does:

GHK-Cu has a remarkably broad range of biological activities relevant to skin health:

It stimulates collagen, elastin, and glycosaminoglycan (including hyaluronic acid) synthesis. It activates antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways. It has been shown to remodel scar tissue and improve wound healing. It promotes the renewal of skin stem cells. It has demonstrated gene expression effects in human fibroblasts that essentially shift cellular behavior toward a younger, more regenerative state.

In practical clinical terms, patients using GHK-Cu as part of a comprehensive protocol show improvement in skin firmness, reduction in fine lines, improved skin tone and texture, and enhanced overall skin quality over time.

Why physician-prescribed matters:

GHK-Cu is available in various over-the-counter serums, but as with all active ingredients, formulation quality, concentration, stability, and bioavailability vary enormously between products. We have over the counter cream available from our IS Clinical product line, but I also prescribe GHK-Cu through a licensed compounding pharmacy at clinically appropriate concentrations as part of individualized protocols that include complementary ingredients and are matched to the patient’s specific skin needs.

This is meaningfully different from purchasing a peptide serum online based on ingredient lists alone.

How I use GHK-Cu in practice:

GHK-Cu is typically incorporated alongside retinoids, vitamin C, and other prescription actives as part of a comprehensive anti-aging skincare protocol. It also pairs powerfully with in-office treatments, particularly RF microneedling and exosome therapy, which create microchannels that allow deeper delivery of topical actives.
