What Are Exosomes and How Are They Used in Skin Treatment?
By Teresa Alasio, MD | Intentional Self Aesthetics, New Canaan, CT
Exosomes are one of the most genuinely exciting developments in regenerative medicine and aesthetics, and they represent a meaningful shift in how we think about skin renewal. Let me explain what they actually are and how we use them at Intentional Self Aesthetics.
What exosomes are:
Exosomes are extracellular vesicles, tiny membrane-bound packets released by cells as part of their communication system. They carry growth factors, proteins, messenger RNA, and lipids that signal neighboring and distant cells to perform specific functions. In biological terms, they are one of the primary mechanisms by which cells coordinate repair, regeneration, and communication.
In the context of skin treatment, exosomes deliver regenerative signals directly to skin cells, encouraging processes like collagen synthesis, cellular repair, reduction of inflammation, and renewal of the extracellular matrix.
EXO|E for skin at Intentional Self Aesthetics:
We use EXO|E by Aesthetic Management Partners, a plant-based exosome skin revitalizing complex. EXO|E is part of a trio that includes D|TOX and RE|PAIR, designed to support skin health and renewal at a cellular level. Plant-derived exosomes carry biologically active signals that are compatible with human skin biology, supporting the skin’s own repair mechanisms without introducing animal-derived or synthetic materials.
EXO|E is applied to the skin following a treatment such as RF microneedling, where the microchannels created by needling allow deep delivery of the exosome complex. The combination of the mechanical stimulus from microneedling and the regenerative signals from exosomes produces a synergistic effect that supports collagen remodeling and skin renewal more effectively than either approach alone.
Who is a good candidate:
Exosome treatments are well-suited for patients looking to address skin aging, texture, tone, and overall quality with a regenerative rather than purely ablative approach. They are also an excellent option for patients who want to optimize recovery and results following more intensive treatments like Halo or BBL.
The state of the science:
Exosome therapy is a rapidly evolving field with an exciting and growing evidence base. It is not a replacement for established treatments, but as a complement to a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan, it represents some of the most innovative thinking in aesthetic medicine today.
