Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?
By Teresa Alasio, MD | Intentional Self Aesthetics, New Canaan, CT
Laser hair removal produces long-lasting, significant hair reduction, but the word “permanent” requires some nuance.
Hair grows in cycles: active growth (anagen), transition (catagen), and resting (telogen). Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair follicle with light energy, which destroys the follicle and prevents future growth. Crucially, it can only effectively treat hairs that are in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Because only a portion of your hairs are in that phase at any given moment, multiple sessions are required to treat all follicles in a given area.
After a complete series of treatments, most patients experience a 70-90% permanent reduction in hair in the treated area. The hairs that do return tend to be finer, lighter, and sparser than before. Occasional maintenance sessions once or twice a year may be needed to address any regrowth.
At Intentional Self Aesthetics, laser hair removal is performed on the Sciton Joule platform with BBL technology, one of the most precise and effective platforms available. The number of sessions required depends on the area being treated, your hair color and thickness, and your skin type. My team will assess these factors and give you a realistic treatment plan at your consultation.
One important clinical note: laser hair removal works best on darker hair, as the technology targets pigment. Very light, gray, or red hair responds less predictably. This is one of the things we assess before recommending a protocol.
