Is a Chemical Peel Too Strong for My Skin?
By Teresa Alasio, MD | Intentional Self Aesthetics, New Canaan, CT
It depends on the peel, and this is exactly the kind of question that deserves a physician’s answer rather than a generic one.
Chemical peels range enormously in strength, from very gentle brightening treatments to deep resurfacing procedures. The right peel for your skin depends on your skin type, your Fitzpatrick phototype (how your skin responds to sun exposure), your primary concerns, your tolerance for downtime, and your history with previous treatments.
At Intentional Self Aesthetics, we offer the SkinMedica peel collection, which gives us three well-calibrated options:
The Illuminize Peel is the gentlest entry point, ideal for sensitive skin, first-time peel patients, or anyone who wants a brightening refresh with no meaningful downtime. If you have been told your skin is too sensitive for peels in the past, this is often where we start.
The Vitalize Peel is a step up in intensity, appropriate for patients with mild to moderate sun damage, uneven tone, fine lines, or early acne scarring. Most patients experience light peeling for a few days.
The Rejuvenize Peel is our most active option, designed for more significant concerns and patients whose skin has been assessed as appropriate for deeper treatment.
The honest answer to “is a peel too strong for my skin” is: it depends on which peel and what your skin’s baseline is. Some skin types, particularly darker Fitzpatrick phototypes, require more careful peel selection to avoid post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Patients on certain medications, including retinoids, need to pause them before treatment. And patients who have had recent sun exposure need to wait.
This is precisely why a physician-led consultation matters before any chemical peel. I evaluate your skin carefully before recommending any peel and will never apply a treatment that isn’t appropriate for your specific skin. If a peel isn’t right for you right now, I will tell you, and tell you what is.
