What Are the Different Types of Facials and What Makes a Medical Facial Different?

By Teresa Alasio, MD | Intentional Self Aesthetics, New Canaan, CT

The word “facial” covers an enormous range of treatments, from a relaxing spa experience with minimal clinical effect to physician-grade treatments that produce measurable structural improvements in the skin. Understanding the difference between medical facials vs. regular facials helps you invest wisely in your skin.

Spa facials:

Traditional spa facials focus on cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, and relaxation. They feel wonderful, support basic skin hygiene, and provide a temporary improvement in skin appearance. They are performed by estheticians using retail-grade products and techniques appropriate for general skin maintenance. For healthy skin that simply needs consistent care, regular spa facials have a place.

What they do not do is address the deeper structural concerns of aging: collagen loss, pigmentation, laxity, scarring, or significant texture irregularities. The products and techniques available in a non-medical setting are not sufficient for these goals.

Medical-grade facials:

Medical facials are performed in a physician-led setting using clinical-grade equipment, prescription-strength products, and techniques that require medical training to perform safely. At Intentional Self Aesthetics, our facial treatments include:

HydraFacial: A multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts, and infuses the skin with medical-grade serums. Safe for all skin types, no downtime, immediate results in tone and hydration. An excellent maintenance treatment and an ideal starting point for patients new to medical aesthetics.

SkinMedica Chemical Peels (Illuminize, Vitalize, Rejuvenize): Physician-selected chemical exfoliation treatments that address sun damage, uneven tone, fine lines, and acne scarring at varying depths. The peel selection is based on your skin type, Fitzpatrick phototype, and treatment goals, not a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Customized Medical Facials: A physician-guided facial incorporating prescription actives, enzyme treatments, and clinical techniques tailored to your specific skin concerns on that day. This is a different experience from a spa facial, built around your skin’s clinical needs rather than a fixed menu.

The skin analysis difference:

At Intentional Self Aesthetics, facial treatments begin with a clinical skin evaluation, including the option of a comprehensive skin scan using our Opatra Skin Analysis technology, which images the skin beneath the surface to identify concerns not visible to the naked eye. This informs which facial protocol is most appropriate for you.
