How Does Sculptra Work?

By Teresa Alasio, MD | Intentional Self Aesthetics, New Canaan, CT

Sculptra is one of the most misunderstood treatments in aesthetic medicine, and one of the most rewarding when patients understand what it actually does.

Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which add immediate volume to a specific area, Sculptra works by stimulating your own body to produce new collagen. Its active ingredient, poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used in medicine for decades. When injected into the deep dermis, it triggers a controlled inflammatory response that stimulates collagen synthesis over time.

The result is a gradual, natural-looking restoration of facial volume and structure, not from a foreign substance filling a space, but from your own collagen rebuilding where it has been lost. Because collagen production takes time, Sculptra results build over several months, with full results typically visible around three to six months after the final session.

Most patients require two to three treatment sessions spaced several weeks apart. The results, once established, can last two years or more, significantly longer than most hyaluronic acid fillers.

Sculptra is particularly well-suited for patients who have experienced diffuse volume loss, the gradual hollowing of the temples, cheeks, and jawline that comes with aging, rather than isolated volume deficits in specific areas. It is also an excellent option for patients who want a very natural, gradual result and are not looking for the immediate change that traditional fillers provide.

At Intentional Self Aesthetics, I use Sculptra as part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation approach, often in combination with other modalities depending on what your anatomy and goals call for.
